Unsung heroes

To the average Canadian, a distributor’s role in the food system is a complete mystery. Unbeknownst to them, distributors play a major role in moving food from producers to restaurants, retailers and institutions.

But we know, and we understand the impact that a distributor can have in building a local sustainable food system.

We’re here for you

Local Food Plus is a charitable non-profit organization working in different regions across Canada to build a local sustainable food system that benefits all stakeholders.

For farmers, distributors, restaurants and retailers, that means support to sustain and help grow their businesses. For a consumer, that means easy access to quality, healthy, locally grown food produced using environmentally and socially sustainable practices.

With the growth of the Local Food Movement the “Plus” of LFP is a third party certification system that helps consumers identify farmers who commit to ecologically responsible production, provide safe and fair working conditions, healthy and humane care for livestock, protect and enhance wildlife and biodiversity, reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gases and foster a strong local economy.

What it means to Partner with LFP

Distribution plays a key role in making the local sustainable food movement possible. You will be able to differentiate yourself from your competitors by offering a Certified Local Sustainable choice on your truck and to identify yourself as a leader in this segment.

We will determine which of your current producers are LFP Certified already and identify new supply opportunities for you.

We will capitalize on potential promotional opportunities, and set to work the initial PR about your commitment to the cause.

Additionally, if you feel there are producers you currently carry who would benefit from our program, we can discuss them on an individual basis when we meet.

Also, we will:

  • Make available an LFP representative to provide general guidance and assistance with the management of the LFP program
  • Allow the use of the LFP “Committed To” mark for your website(s), materials and any other promo items
  • Provide a training session (up to ½ day) for key staff.
  • Meet with designated staff at least quarterly to review all LFP certified products and lists of producers, processors and handlers certified by LFP.
  • Allow the use of the LFP name be publicity associated with your company.
  • List your company on the LFP website and in other relevant partner directories which LFP may produce.
